The show follows the life of Dr. Douglas Howser ... who goes by the name of Doogie. As a young child Doogie twice survived leukemia. His father was a physician. These facts encouraged Doogie to become a doctor himself.
Possessing a genius intellect, Howser got a perfect score on the SAT at the age of six years. He completed high school in a matter of nine weeks. He then graduated from Princeton University at age 10. He completed medical school four years later. By the time he reached the age of 14, Doogue was the youngest licensed doctor in the country.
The series begins on Doogie's 16th birthday. Doogie is a resident surgeon at the fictional Eastman Medical Center in Los Angeles, and still lives with his parents at home. His best friend and neighbor is Vinnie Delpino. Vinnie is a more typical teenager ... climbing through Doogie's bedroom window to visit and so forth. He keeps Doogie grounded in life outside his profession. Doogie also keeps a diary on his computer. In many cases, the episodes end with him making an entry in his diary.
Although Doogie Howser is no longer on the air with original episodes, it can be seen in syndication and in re-runs in many cities and communities.
